This blog is supposed to be about character archetypes: what they are, where to find them, etc. The aim is to create a greater understanding of the characters we see in fiction, both for me and for my readers.
Each post will follow an outline for easier reading:
- What, Where, Why
- A quick definition of the archetype, famous examples of that archetype, and a discussion of what that narrative archetype is.
- History Lesson
- A short lesson on how the character archetype came to be in fiction or how it came to be named.
- Good, Bad, and Ugly
- A description of how to use the archetype well, and how not to use it well. And maybe some especially poor examples of this.
- Example Time
- A short creative writing segment where I write from the perspective of a character in this archetype, what it means to them and their thought process.
Hopefully this process will help all of us in understanding how these characters work.
